How to make you mouse pointer bigger in OSX Lion 10.7

I have been quite specific as I haven’t tested in earlier versions of OSX but I find locating that little mouse pointer in OSX really difficult at times. especially when you have 3 monitors you are using you mac with (21″ external, HD macbookpro panel & an Imac via teleport) It is easy to loose your mouse and in the process look an idiot trying to find the dam thing by wiggling the mouse like mad.
Well Fear not, I have a solution!

Steps:

  • press cmd+space to get spotlight up
  • type system and click on system preferences
  • once system preferences opens, click on ‘Universal Access’ (top rightish)
  • click on the ‘mouse & trackpad tab
  • Near the bottom of this page is a ‘CursorSize’ slider.
  • Drag that to the right and hey presto, bigger mouse pointer.

and here is it:

How to get rid of Youtube popup ads – OSX

The adverts in question here are those ones that overlay a video during play back. Sometimes these ads take up 50% of the video playback size wich is frankyl really irritiating. I am not a fan of having advert shoved down my throat and as such I have for years used the most excellent Ad-Block+ on all browsers possible. It doesnt seem to catch these ones though, so I did a little digging and have found out a method of blocking them system wide, no matter what browser you use.

To start of with I will demonstrate how this is done on OSX (Lion) as this is what I was running .

  1. Fire up Terminal – to do this quickly press cmd+space to get Spotlight up and simply type terminal
  2. In the terminal window type: sudo nano /private/etc/hosts
  3. This should open your hosts file. There will be a whole bunch of numbers in there (or maybe not)
  4. At the end of the list paste in this:
    255.255.255.255 pagead2.googlesyndication.com
    255.255.255.255 googleads.g.doubleclick.net
  5. Then press the ctrl key + x
  6. This will ask you if you want to save, say ‘y’ for yes
  7. One last thing to do now
  8. In terminal type this:
    dscacheutil -flushcache
  9. (this flushes the cache and re reads the hosts file)
Now try the you tube video you were looking at earlier (re-load the page) and the irritating adverts that get in the way will be gone.
I will follow this up with a Windows version soon but if you know how to edit the hosts file in Windows then it is simply a matter of adding those two lines from above.

Some of my photos taken at the 2011 British F1GP

As promised I went to the British F1 GP at Silverstone this year and camps for the full 4 day weekend. I didn’t take as many photos as I have in previous years but I focused more on enjoying the event.

British Formula 1 GP coming up soon

I am going to be taking our Nikon D60 and hugemongous lens again this year and hopefully I will be able to get some great shots. When I get back I will be posting some of my faves taken over the last few years of Silverstone F1 visits in a gallery on this site.

Just 2 weeks to go till GP time.

Which flash version am I using?

I had to find this out recently and it’s usually qui0 te easy on a modern browser such as Chrome (who just went stable with version 12) or Firefox 3 or 4, But try finding this in Safari.
Fear not A quick google found this really handy page which not only shows you the version that the browser is using but the current stable version you can install. Here is the link http://flashbuilder.eu/flash-player-version.html

JackDinns speed test tool

I recently came accross this really rather nifty speed test tool made by some guy called Jack Dinn, it measures at set intervals the up and down speed of your broadband connection and display nice averages.

I have run it in the background for a little over a day on my work connection and the traffic differences are really notable. It is in an office with about 30 plus people in it and it a web dev company (with a shitty 2 meg leased line).

I am going to run it for a while at home on my 50 meg at home to see how it goes.

here is the resulting graph for work.

Unravelling the secrets of WordPress

This is a post and a half, Nettuts have a really handy guide for doing some cool stuff in WordPress including how to get alternating background colours in WordPress comments. This is something I have been looking to do for ages and now it’s should be pretty straight forward.

Headway theme framework

I have been playing around with this on this my dev site and came across some really useful sites if anyone is trying to get started on developing a theme or site with Headway.

http://headwaytips.com – there are some really useful tips a guides on how to do things, you know the kind of things that you need to do but can’t do out of the box.

http://headwayhub.com – another great site that has taught me many things including how to add a monster background image via the live css editor, as seen here http://www.headwayhub.com/2010/06/06/how-add-background-image-headway-theme-ultimate-guide/

Headway themes are great

Well the Headway theme developer kit is.

It is a really clever framework that takes the hardwork out of theme development. I am using Headway on this site currently and playing around with it. I hope to use it properly on a biggish project soon but as with all these frameworks for WordPress there are limitations. At least limitations of what the Visual Editor can do anyway as it looks like I am going to have to get my hands dirty on the css and image from ront, but that’s ok.

It is clever stuff none the less! I am even tempted to buy it as it is soo handy
